How to use your spiritual gifts

Have you ever felt  you don’t have any spiritual gifts, that God has passed you by?  That is not true.   Once  we accept Christ as our Lord and savior, we are given spiritual gifts, and we are also given a measure of faith.

When we feel the Holy Spirit prompting us to do or say something, what is our first reaction? For me, it was doubt and insecurity. I doubted the gifts the Lord placed upon me and I could not trust.

I feared failure.

The  lies came in like a flood, and I believed every single one of them.

I believed the lie that said I will sound stupid, why are you going to speak, they will only ignore you.  You, a sinner? How could God possibly use you?  It took a long time for me to finally step out and trust God.

The change did not happen overnight; it was  gradual. The gifts the Lord gave me are pure, the vessel  was not. This vessel had some cleaning out to do, big time!

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Through the Holy Spirit,  we have the power to testify.  He  is the spirit of truth.  We have life and peace. He  gives us gifts to edify the church, and the spirit gives us liberty.

Now  we know this, how do we begin operating in our spiritual gifts?

Give it voice

Please open your mouth and speak.  Don´t do what I did. After it was all over,  then I would speak up. It was too late, and the blessing was robbed.

Step out in faith

When we feel a nudge inside our gut, a feeling, a sensation, a thought, that is the Holy Spirit speaking to us.

We will need to step out in faith, and say what came to mind.  Anything from the Lord will be words of encouragement and exhortation. There will be no correcting or rebuking.

Share with others

If you are unsure of what you are receiving, share it with a seasoned person. That´s ok, it does not mean that you are wrong, it just means you need some encouragement and reassurance.

What if you make a mistake?

Great! Now you know what NOT  to do.  You will avoid that mistake the second or third time around.  Making mistakes  is the only way you will grow in your gift , it is  our best learning curve and teacher.

What about  insecurity, the lies?

We all face the lies the enemy throws our way, and we need to identify them and discard them. When I pray for people, one of the things I teach is how to discard the lie and replace it with the truth.

Speak the opposite of the lie.  Find scripture, or receive the truth from the Holy Spirit and speak it over yourself.

Hang out with like-minded people

When you are stepping out in your spiritual gifts, look for those that are mature in the Lord. They will be more than happy to help you and pray for you. Spend time with them, have coffee, or just ask to meet with them so  you can evacuate your fears, doubts, and concerns. These people  love to help.

I enjoy very much encouraging those I see with a great potential and ending our time in prayer and exhortation.

As you grow and mature in the Lord, so will your gifts. But you must use them to increase your spiritual muscles. As you use your gifts, you will be surprised how the Lord will cause you to grow and mature.  Before you know it, you will be eating solid food.

Why I moved

In learning about the craft of writing through my writers’ course, I have come to find out that  in order for me to begin my career as a Christian writer, I need to blog and create things around my name.

I had Fresh Wind Ministries for many years, and the name is dear to me and I wanted to update it and breathe life into it. I am now  moving  to new areas of my life.

We all face changes, and with each new change comes growth. I invite you to follow me to witness that change and growth, as I develop into my calling.   Also, you have permission to hold me accountable!

Perhaps this will inspire and challenge you to do the same.

Consider the call of God upon your life.  What have you been gifted with, are you in obedience to your gifts and calling?  If so,  you will be touching the lives around you, all pointing to hope.  If you are still unsure and have not stepped out yet, I encourage you to do so.  You will not be disappointed because you will have the best cheerleader on your side, the Lord Jesus Christ!

What are you storing?

storing up

Perhaps you have read or heard how we are to store food and survival items to prepare for some disaster that may lie ahead.  While I am not against storing up, I do have extra items on hand since we do live in an area prone to earthquakes and active volcanos.  Not long ago, we had a power outage that lasted 22 hours, so for us, having extra essentials is a must.

In the spiritual sense, I believe that there are things that we should have an abundance of, to help and encourage others.

The word says in 2 Timothy 4:2 to be ready out of season.   So what can we store up when we are hit off season?

The first thing that comes to mind is faith.  We need faith that if anything does come our way, may it be some form of natural disaster, job loss, family breakup or illness, our faith is full to trust in the Lord to get us through.

We should have the word in our spirits to give to others to encourage, uplift and exhort, and  to come up against any type of warfare that we may need to do.

We must know our authority in Christ. Who we are in Him, what He did for us, and that we are seated in heavenly places.

We should not have any fear, doubt or unbelief in our pantry.  These are true killers to our faith, and will paralyze  and cause defeat.

How do you stock up?

Romans 10:17 says  So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Spend time stocking your pantry with the right ingredients, the word of God,  and when disaster strikes you will be ready.

What other ingredients can you think of that we should have in our pantry?

Mention them below in the comments, I would love to hear from you.

What have you lost?

Recently my husband went to a men’s meeting at church, and the guest speaker shared his testimony of restoration.  He grew up as a pastor’s son, and from a young age he experienced loss.  He lost being the firstborn and the only child receiving all the attention, later his dog, then friends when his family moved and so on.  Because his life was one of a missionary status, they had frequent moves.  He grew up angry and resentful, and thus did not get along well with his pastor/missionary father.

As the years progressed, he began using drugs and alcohol and his marriage failed.  It wasn´t until much later that he returned to the Lord, reconciled with his father  and was able to make amends and turn his life around.

I love these testimonies because it is filled with hope.  Hope that yes, we do have a God that sees our pain and failures and we have a God that restores.

This man had to recognize he had a problem and allowed the Lord to work in his life to bring restoration once again.

It wasn’t easy. Habits had to be broken, and he had to intentionally change in many areas of his life.

It took discipline.

But he had something inside of him.  He had the word of God.  He also mentioned that his mother never stopped praying for him.

It isn’t easy to recognize failure and to apologize and come clean. It takes a strong person to do that.  This man had the backing of his current wife, and most importantly, the backing of the Lord.

What was the result?

A new and better life.  Reconciliation with his father just before he passed away.  A growing ministry, and a heart of compassion and anointing to reach those that have experienced loss.

All of us can learn something from this story.

Allow Father God to turn your failures and weakness into triumphs.  He will surprise you, and only He can turn things around and restore  what the enemy has stolen.

As the example in this story, it took a strong man to admit his pain and failure, and it was there that when he  humbled himself,  the Lord raised him up again.

How to run the race before you

All of us at one point in our lives find ourselves running a race, whether we recognize it or not.

Races are different for each and every one of us.  For some it may be just getting through the week, month or year.  Other races could involve finishing a course, obtaining a  promotion, a work contract, or crossing something off your bucket list.

As a young child I never had any dreams.  They were not spoken of in the home, neither were goals, travels or college.  I don´t blame my parents, they only taught us what they knew.

As I began dreaming of doing something different with my life, I found myself in a continual race.  I put myself there, on purpose.   This race is different because it involves Christ in me.  In order for me to run this race, I had to allow God to mold and shape me, so that I can run my race more effectively.

My goals, dreams and aspiration of learning, growing, reading and writing will never stop.  I had to learn to rid myself of things that get in the way. Not just sin, but distractions and deception.  I run my race with determination, because it lies before me.

It was up to me to allow Him to do that.  I had to leave the old behind to receive the new.  Mindsets are difficult to leave behind.    I had to learn to trust and obey.  The result was maturity, healing, growth and a desire to learn and do more.

The fear of running my race no longer exist, I won´t allow it to get the best of me.

Hebrews 12:1  As for us, we have this large crowd of witnesses around us. So then, let us rid ourselves of everything that gets in the way, and of the sin which holds on to us so tightly, and let us run with determination the race that lies before us.

What is your race?  What is your goal, what is your passion, and what is your why? Do you dare to allow God to work in and through you to make your dreams a reality?  It´s ok to trust and let go.  It works!

Once you are able to answer those questions, your race will be a joy to run.
